Most golfers score over 100 and find it difficult to improve. I’m not going to tell you to take lessons because I want your money. I can go back to selling pharmaceuticals if I want a better car! It’s a matter of how much you REALLY want to improve.
If you are among the 3% of self taught golfers who score in the 70’s then I’m a little jealous. And congratulations for having more natural gifts than the rest of us. But the other 97% of golfers who regularly shoot in the 70’s practice and have had professional coaching!
MY 3 THOUGHTS
Thought #1: If you are a beginner, TAKE lessons!
Please don’t do what most of us did; trying to teach ourselves for years by reading books and listening to tips from every buddy with a day job who slices into the woods. All we managed to do was further develop incorrect muscle memory and now have to spend months and years trying to undo them. Think of trying to prop up a house that’s falling down versus building a new solid foundation; which is stronger and neater? For beginners I recommend a lesson package of between 5 to 10 lessons. If you’re not sure you’ll like the game enough to invest time or money take 2 or 3 lessons or take them with 1 or 2 friends or join a clinic with 6 to 10 persons. It’s more economical and you’ll learn to enjoy golf. If you want to get more serious about the game, you can take private lessons later on.
Thought #2: You don’t have to be good!
If you’re happy to be outside in the fresh air, socialize, drink beer and don’t care how well you play, spend your money at the 19th hole.
(you can buy me one...I take this game far too seriously!
Thought #3: If you enjoy practicing, tinkering with your swing
Reading golf tips in magazines, and really WANT to take your game to a higher level, and you are open minded, TAKE LESSONS. You will usually do more harm than good practicing bad habits and leading your golf muscles down the wrong path. (You’ll need a good compass to find your way back).
HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU'LL LIKE ME?
In order for lessons to be effective, you MUST feel good about your teacher and feel he speaks your language. I suggest you call me, chat with me on the phone or come meet me on the range. I’ll watch you swing and hit some balls, we’ll talk about your swing, and then you decide if you like my style and want me as your coach. No obligations. |
