Simple: Find an activity you really like, learn the techniques, and keep practicing. One day you’ll do it well and then it’s no longer a secret! This applies to everything in life, no matter how much natural talent one has, whether it’s playing piano or being a good accountant.
Technique + dedication = THE SECRET
Sometimes secrets come quickly. In 2007 I had two students who could crush the ball, but the balls went from Atlantic to Pacific with some chunks and tops along the way. Both of these pretty good players had very active hands. I had them LET their hands hit the ball rather than TRY to be so wristy. They both began hitting consistently high and straight shots within 10 minutes. For them this was their secret. But they had very good fundamentals and were doing many things correctly. They just needed that one ‘secret.’
For most students I have success within a very short period of time.
OK, secrets to hitting the ball consistently well:
1 Combine good coaching with regular practice.
2 Pay very close attention to your fundamentals.
3 Keep your grip loose and your arms soft.
4 Do NOT get bogged down by technical jargon.
Secrets to getting lower scores:
1 Spend at least 50% of your practice time on chipping, pitching and putting.
2 Invest in a playing lesson, because knowing good strategy and course management will save you at least 7 shots per round.
3 Learn to focus properly on EVERY shot.
4 Ensure you have the equipment that’s right for you.
And finally: If you are a great chipper and good putter, have good fundamentals, and know how to REALLY manage your own game, you should be scoring at least in the mid to high 80’s even if your swing is only average. If you’re not doing it, I will show you how.
